Hello Class!
This blog entry takes us to chapter 5, where we will find some things about the process of writing in children, which generally develops in stages that are parallel to the acquisition of oral language, so children even develop their own coded system.
Please read from page 60 to 64 in our textbook and answer the following:
- What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
- Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
- Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
- What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
- In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
Remember that opinions can not be exactly the same, and if you do not answer every question to the detail, you will not get all the points for your comments.
Scribbles: are the way of how Young children started and experiment with the writing language.
ResponderBorrarAt what age do children being using them and when do they stop using them and envolve?
Children started using scribbles much earlier than age 3. When they already have 3 years they stop using them and they are able to distinguish between drawing and writing.
Why do children start using invented spelling?
Children start using invented spelling when they discern and relate the letter they are writing to the words they are creating because they think that a word is a letter. In that way they invented spelling.
Why is his process completely logical to researches?
To researchers is logical moreover than they are research about the topic they found that children used to express each word in a message by one or two letters.
Three stage of invented spelling in English
Phonemic stage children are confused with the phonemic and sound of the letters. They use to combine the letters sound to produce words and message but the meaning is not much clear yet.
Transitional spelling this stage involves the correct spelling of words and invented spelling. In this point children are trying to communicate with the writing language and in this point the message is more comprehensible than the phonemic stage.
Standard spelling in this stage children use different model and combinations. And they create and construct orthographic rulers beginning from create meaning.
Psychogenesis is an approach that consists in that children have to be in contact with the text and the writing language in that way child will be able to apply or appropriated of the writing system and the writing language.
Developmentally ordered levels
Developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish
First level of development in this point children know that write is not the same with draw. In this level child discovered that exist drawing but also exist symbols, letters, numbers ect. And are not the same.
Second level of development in this point children know that they can use the letters for create different words but they do not relate the sound with the letter form.
Third stage of development in these stage children related the letter with the sound of the language. They started to know the syllabic alphabetic and they realize that each letter has a sound and that each part of a word must be represented by a letter.

ResponderBorrarChildren's Construction of Literacy Through Writing
ResponderBorrar1- scribble is an important step in child development. It is the way that children use to express their feeling and ideas. with scribbles they begin to discover writing, when they start writing children show their creativity using pencil, markers, paint brushes and even their finger.
children begin using scribbles when they are able to hold a crayon or pencil, they are ready to scribble with it. It helps them to develop their strength and control in his fingers. It stops when children distinguished between drawing and writing as two different symbols.
2-Invented spelling is a learning process of children, they begin to relate the letter names to the sound of the alphabet. it is usually that children invent spelling for words in their daily vocabulary.
It is a process completely logical to researchers, because children are experiment and development their skills.
3-phonetic stage: children use letters to represent each sound that they hear, also they use words easily to understand.
letter name:children use some strategies to represent words, and they spell words with short vowels.
Transitional spelling: children begin representing sounds using visual representation.
4-The term psychogenesis describe the gradual evolution of children's literacy development.
5- the first level development involve that children distinguished that drawing and writing are different.
-The final stage of development involve that children identify the sound of the language
1.Scribbles are the beginning to develop a skill in children in order to be able to write. Scribbles are a good way that they use, many times to express. The begin use it, is when children are able to use a pencil or crayon at two ages or three, and they stop using it when they distinguish between writing and scribbling.
ResponderBorrar2.Invented spelling refers to young children's attempts to use their best judgments about spelling. It is logical because children are experiencing a learning process.
3.The phonemic stage which involves children labeling pictures where usually the beginning sound of the theme of the picture is matched to its first letter. The second stage children move on to is the letter-name stage where beginning and ending letters are both used to represent a word. The fourth stage is the transitional stage where the middle sound in a word, the consonant, is included in writing.
4.Psychogenesis is focusing in which children have to be in contact with the text and the writing language, in order to apply or appropriated of the writing language.
5.The first one development children know that is not the same draw and write. They are able to distinguish it.
The second one children know they can use letters, but they do not know that with those letters they will create a new word.
The third one children relate
They begin to know the alphabet, they listen the sound of each letter and begin to wonder. Then the children know the letters and know that each letter has its different sound.
Scribbles are symbols that Young children start creating since early ages, probably at age one. They create scribbles in order to represent their ideas. Moreover, scribbles help them to become stronger their hands and finger to control better their scribbling instrument such as pencils, markets etc. Children stop using scribbles at age three, at this age, children are able to repeat patterns of symbols that they follow from adults.
ResponderBorrarChildren start using invented words because they have risen better comprehension between letters and words that they write, in addition to this many researchers have found that this process is logical because young children are able to unscramble their scribbles based on their own perception of what they write.
According to Temple, Nathan and Burris (1982) there are three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling.
1-Phonemic stage, in this stage young children use a letter or a group of letters to represent a message, young children divide the message in some letters instead of writing the whole message or word that they hear.
2-Letter-name, in this stage young children learn to identify different letters as well as they can in a way that is readable to themselves and for others. They usually write the names of letters instead of letters sounds.
3-Transitional spelling, in this stage, young children include all the necessary letters of a word in a correct way, and also they are able to create words that reflect the use of patterns spelling that children have found in the process of writing.
According to Emilia and Ana Teberosky the term ‘’Psychogenesis’’ is about how children develop the acquisition process of Spanish writing system.
1-At the first level of development children discover the difference between drawing and writing, in this level children are able to adjust letters to their own writing in order to develop the writing skill.
2-At the second level of development children are able to understand the letters to express meanings, moreover they are able to change the order or sequences of letters to construct their writing language.
3-At the third level of development children find out how letters form and sounds are related in the language, they understand that every letter of a word has its own sound.
Scribbles are written marks that children usually use when they haven´t learned how to write. These symbols don´t usually have a meaning. However, children use them to try to express themselves. They may use scribbles before the age of three and they stop using them when they realize that there´s a relationship between squiggles and the sounds. Writing using simplest forms, such as marks, scribbles, and lines of loops.
ResponderBorrarChildren start using invented spelling because is a way to practice spelling unfamiliar words by making an educated guess as to the correct spelling based on the writer's existing phonetic knowledge.
Phonemic stage: In this stage, letters represent sounds. Children try to write a word using just one letter or at most two letters.
Letter-name: Here children use more than 1 or 2 consonant letters. They start including some vowels. They take more into account the name of the letter than the sound.
Transitional spelling: In this stage, children mix the correct spellings and invented spellings. Their writing increases and looks better.
Psychogenesis: Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's use this term to describe the progress the children achieve during the literacy process. This is to know the proficiency of the students in this field.
At the first development level, children recognize the differences between symbol systems such as drawing and writing. They also understand how to adjust the letter forms and their writing.
The second development level, children know how to use the same letters in a different order to make new words.
The third developmental level, includes the phonetization of writing. In other words, the relation of the sounds and the letters. Children begin to know about the composition of syllables.
1- SCRIBBLES are the way how the children express their ideas, can be the first steps in learning to write. they being using scribbles since they are able to hold a pencil, a crayon or a pen and start to reproduce scribbles, they stop using them by the age of 3 at this time they are able to write in te correct way.
ResponderBorrar2- they strat using invented spelling because they want to write and about the relationships between those sounds and the letters in printed words. Thinking about the sounds and letters in words helps to develop children’s phonics skills.
3- Phonetic Stage
The child spells through sound-symbol correspondence. They may not be aware that some strings of letters aren't acceptable in English.
letter names
The children used several ingenious strategies to spell words with short vowels They select letters to represent short vowels on the basis of place of articulation in the mouth.
Transitional Stage
The child uses the basic conventions Language system. They start to become aware of the patterns in language spelling, that extends further than using phonetic spellings.
4- both of them said that Psychogenesis is describe the gradual evoluation of children´s literacy development.
5- At the first level of development children are able to distinguish that writing and drawing have different meanings.
- At the second level of development children are able to make and form different words with a meaning. combining letters
- the final stage of development children make relation between letters and sounds, understanding each meaning
1. Scribbles are written symbols the children use when they don't know how to write yet, they try to imitate adutlt wirting. They star using them before age three, by this age they already know the differemce between symbols and the meaning of them.
ResponderBorrar2. The children start inventing spelling when they start relating letters with the words they write. It seems logical because they are in a learning process and they don't know the exact spelling of word, so they invent it and think is correct.
3. a) Phonemic stage: The children use one or two letters to represent a whole word.
b) Letter-name: The start using more vowels and consonants, and they use the name of a letter instead of the sound.
c) Transitional spelling: They mix correct and invented spellings, and these are a reflection of spelling patterns/invented spellings they have seen.
4. The children's literacy development evolution.
5. a) First level: The children figure out that drawing and writing are two diffrerent systems. They adapt the letters they see and adapt them to their own writing.
b) Second level: In this level the children are able to use different letter to form different meanings.
c) Final stage: They relate letters to sounds, and understand that each letter has a different sound from another.
1 Are the way how the children express their idea and emotions scribbles are the first steps in leering to write. Ideas to encourage children to scribbles and draw. Children started using scribbles mach earlier than age 3 .the begin use it is when set out lots paper , pencil , crayon and ,markers so can draw or scribble whenever they want.
ResponderBorrar2when children are first learning how to write .they create their own spelling for words because they do not know how to spell correctly and using invented spelling. Can play an important role in the helping .children learn how to write.
3Phomelelre stage
The children use a letter a group of le letter o group of letter
Represent every speech sound that they hear in a word. Letter name children use most beginning and ending consonants and include a vowel in most syllables. Children learn to present phonemes in words with letter. Transitional spelling children developing their spelling skills and how phonetic or invented spelling. 4 according to Emilia and Ana teberosky the term Psychogenesis is about how children development their own knowledge of Spanish writing system. 5 at the fist level development children that write and draw are different . at the second level children know that they can create words using letter . at the third level children find out how letter from sound .
1 What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
ResponderBorrarR// SRIBBLES are when the chindren start to expereiment with how to express their purposes using those written symbols.much earlier than age three, children may use scrbbles similar to cursive.
2 Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
R// children begin to relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating and use invented spelling.
sttudies of invented have spelling have madde it clear that children's attempts at orthography are logical and reasoned.
3 Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
- they not the children typically represent each word in a message by one or at most two word, in my opinion those things start when the children only listen but they do not try tinking, they only express.
- letter-name, they have been learning some vowels and consonatns and they start using.
- letter naming, they start spelling and they usually do it correct.
4 What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
R//psychogenesis to describe the gradual evolution of children's literacy development.
5 In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
- level of development the childres have already learned the different between the two symbols sistem (drawing and writing)
- they have been learning all the vowels and consonant, and then they will create a word, they are able to understant the words.
- They comprehen the different sounds.
Scribbles are symbols that young children start doing for the first time before to know how to write correctly. They start using to transmit their thoughts since early ages possibly before three years old and stop making then at three years because at this age they are already able to follow patterns.
ResponderBorrarYoung children are able to use invented words because they achieve a better comprehension between letters and words, and also this process is logical because young children are able to create words based on their own thoughts.
Phonemic stage, in this stage Young Children interact with letters and make groups of them in order to represent a messages that someone tell them.
Letter-name, in this stage Young Children can identify latters end make words according to sounds that they hear.
Transitional Stage, in this stage children are able to incorporate in the process of writing all the words correctly.
According to Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Taberosky the term ‘’Psychogenesis’’ refers to the advance of children’s literacy.
1-children distinguish the main difference between symbols of writing and drawing.
2-children know how to use letters to create a new word in order to get the system of writing.
3-children establish a relation between letters and sounds to create new words.
Scribbles i think are symbols children can use before start to write. little kids start using their thoughts since they learn to write
ResponderBorrarScribbles is an important step in child development, is the way how the children express their ideas. It can be first step in learning to write.Children star to writing and use their creativity. They being using scribbles since they are able to hold a pencil or crayon.
ResponderBorrarInvented spelling is a learning process of children. They begin to relate the letter names to the sound of the alphabet. It is usually that children invent spelling for words in their daily vocabulary.

Children use and express each word in a message by one or two letters.
Three stage of invented spelling in English.
Phonemic: children use letter to represent each sound that they hear, also they use words, easily to understand. They use to combine the letters sound to produce words and message but the meaning is not much clear yet.
Traditional spelling: children use the correct spelling of words and invented spelling, they are trying to communicate with the writing language and in this moment the message is more comprehensible than the phonemic stage.
Standard spelling: children use different models and combinations. They create and construct orthography rules beginning from create meaning.
Psychogenesis: it describe the gradual evolution of the literacy development in the children, they have to be in contact with the text and the writing language in order to apply it correctly.
1. At the first level of development children discover the difference between drawing and writing in this level children are able to adjust letters to their own writing in order to develop the writing skill.
2. At the second level of development children are able to understand the letters to express meaning. They are able to change sequences of letters to construct their writing language.
3. At the third level of development children find out how letters form and sounds are related in the language they understand that every letter of a word has it own sound.
1- Scribbles are like the first concepts that children star to represent in written language, such as labels, names and ideas. Children start using them much earlier that the age of three, and they stop using them by the age of three.
ResponderBorrar2- Children start using invented spelling because they begin to relate the letter they are writing to the words they are creating. This process of completely logical because by the time children write words they are using and developing their orthography as well.
3- a) Early phonemic stage: here children start writing words through short messages which just can include one or two letters.
b) Letter- name: here children star combining vowels and consonants, however they pay more attention to the latter's name instead of their sounds. Then, they associate the name of letter to make sentences.
c) transitional spelling: this combines correct spelling and invented spelling by the way that children listen and spell what they listened.
4- According to Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky, Psychogenesis is the process in which children evolute gradually until they become literate.
5- a) At the first level children discover that they have a variety of letters to use.they start writing syllables.
b) At the second level, children start playing with the syllabus alphabet to make words. Also, they become aware that using different letters they can add sounds. By changing letters the meaning changes, too. They play with the sequence of letters, words and syllables.
c) At the last level, children identify and become aware that each letter has a specific sound, and by joining those sounds they can make words.
Scribbles are where children can express their first ideas.
ResponderBorrarAllow children to be free to create their own ideas, it doesn't matter if adults can't identify what the child is drawing.the child knows and that's what is important.
By the age of three begin using them and they stop using them, when they figure out that squiggles or forms are related to( and must in same way symbolize) the sound of the language they are writing.
Children start using invented spelling because they are motivated to learn how write any word and they begin to relate the letters they are creating and use invented spelling.
The process is completely logical to researches because when the learners began to associate words, sounds and letters they either hypothesized that each word was represented by one letter.
Phonemic stage:children need one or more letter this they can communicate with others.
Letter name:children Know the vowels and consonant thus a child might represent the sentence.
Transitional spelling:in this stage children can use the correct spelling found in print.
Ferreiro and Teberosky (1982) they coined the term psychogenesis to describe the gradual evolution of children's literacy development.
First level: children figure out what is the difference between drawing and writing.
Second level: children know that they can use letter to express ideas and they can create different words.
The final stages : children related the sound with each letter.

1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
ResponderBorrarScribbles represent children’s first self-initiated encounters with art and first writing attempts.
Scribbling is to writing what babbling is to speaking: an early stage of children’s development that should be encouraged. Children begin to scribble as early as 1 year of age, as they continue to scribble; children begin to notice what they are doing. As their hands and fingers become stronger and they are better able to control their scribbling implement, their scribbles begin to evolve into shapes: circles, ovals, squares, and crosses, among others, one on top of the other.
2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
Because children begin to relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating. They take what they hear in speech and represent it in print. It is a logical process because it allows children to engage in a analytical process that followed by appropriate feedback, has been found to facilitate learning to read and spell, not hamper the process.
3. Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
• Early Phonemic Stage: Children begin to understand that letters stand for particular sounds, they often use single letters to represent words, sounds or syllables and might use the first sound heard in the word to represent the whole word.
• Letter-name Stage: children use most beginning and ending consonants and include a vowel in most syllables. Students use a letter or group of letters to represent each sound they hear in the word. Many simple “consonant-vowel-consonant” words may be spelled correctly at this stage.
• Transitional Spelling Stage: students are learning to recognize common patterns and structures in words, and they begin to use those patterns in their writing. For example, students learn that adding an “e” to the end of a word usually changes a vowel to a long vowel, and they apply that rule to many words. They might spell “mate” and “take” correctly after learning this rule, but they may also write “nite” and “wate.”
4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
It is about describing the gradual evolution of children through three developmentally ordered levels as they construct the written system of Spanish.
5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
• First level: children are able to tell apart the different purposes between writing and drawing. When it comes to writing they adapt to their environment.
• Second level: even though at this level children encounter some difficulties formulating words or expressing their ideas they play around with the letters that are available to them, changing the order to create new words with no regards to relating the sounds to the letters.
• Third level: at this stage children realize sound has to be involved when spelling, that every sound in a word needs representation.
1. What are scribbles? At what age do children begin using them and when do they stop using them and evolve?
ResponderBorrarScribbles are lines lopes etc. that doesn’t say anything nor make any sense for adult but apparently means a lot for kids. Children start using scribbles much earlier than you can imagine before the age of three at this age they seem to already know how to recognize written langue.
2. Why do children start using invented spelling? Why is this process completely logical to researchers?
Once children know their alphabet they begin to relate the letters they are writing to the words they are creating and use invented spelling. It is logical to researchers because significant changes in children occur when they figure out that the squiggles or forms are related to sound of the language they are writing.
3. Please explain in your own words the three stages of invented spelling in English, before arriving at standard spelling, according to Temple, Nathan, and Burris (1982).
The phonemic stage: that includes students labeling pictures with the beginning sound of the word for the picture.
Letter-name this stage young students are able to identify different letters. where they usually write the names of letters instead of letters sounds.
Transitional spelling stage: children are able to complete a word correctly.
4. What is Emilia Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky's term psychogenesis about?
psychogenesis describes how the children are developing literacy.
5. In your own words, describe each of the three developmentally ordered levels found in children as they construct the written system of Spanish.
first children recognize the differences between drawing and writing.
second children are to form a word using letters.
Third children are able to relate sounds and letters.
scribbles: are the type of wrtting that the children use for express their ideas or represent their imagination. They begin using it eralier than age three and they finich when they descover a new way for show their own ideas. children star using invented spelling because they want yo related the writing par whit the sounds of the language and this is logical to researches because we can see significante changes in children´s writting. Here, they made it clear that children´s attemps at orthogragy are logical reasoned althougg they do not conform to standard adults forms.
ResponderBorrarPHONEMIC STAGE: here children identify sounds whit their own symbol and spelling.
LETTER- NAME: children try to use the name of some letters vowels and consonats to form an only word. It can be difficult for them to identify and creat a word.
LETTER-NAMING STAGE: in this stage we have a fution using the correct words and their scribbels creating a correct way of language.
PSYCHOGENESIS: The authors use this words for describe all the develop of children´s literacy and how they construc the writting system of Spanish.
- First Level: here children what they have in their enviroment and they adapt it in a writting way.
- Second Level: this stage they can interpret the words and how the meaning change if we replace one word, in this form they related words whit meaning.
- Third Level: here children identify sounds related whit symbols, then how this change to a word and how they know the meaning and how to use it.
ResponderBorrar1. scribblings are the first graphic activity. At a very young age, children begin to express themselves through their drawings. I know the symbolism of the first strokes, what the colors and the spaces of the leaf they use mean.
2. scribble itself arises from the age of 2, when the child begins to have greater motor control. This allows you to have a greater projection: the strokes are longer, first they start with horizontal stripes, then vertical, until they finally start with the circles.
3. children realize that there is no connection between the sounds of a word and the letters used to write that word, they begin to use what is known as 'invented spelling.' 'Invented spelling' is the way children explore language and express themselves creatively. They learn to write in the same way they learn to speak.
4. Psychogenesis is shown in that loa have to be in contact with the text or language in order to be able to appropriate the writing.
5. The first children do not know how to write but if they know the back and the second they cover the letters but they do not know how to use them And the third child already knows the letter and begins to become familiar with the alphabet.
