Language and Emergent Literacy

Welcome to Early Literacy!

We are going to learn everything we need to know about young learners, the development of their skills, a preschool classroom environment, multiple intelligence, methodology, and all the important things you need to know in order to be a successful English teacher for the little ones.

To start with this blog, please Read Chapter 1 (pgs. 2-8), and then:


  1. Mention and explain (in your own words) three facts about language.
  2. Define "Emergent Literacy" in your own words.

  1. Language is a human universal
    Language helps us to understand and communicate what we mean and is universal because every nation, region or area has its own language that they understand and use to interact in society

    Human beings have an innate capacity to learn language
    Since we grow up we start to learn about our language discovering and pronouncing the common words and phrases, we have the necessity to communicate for this reason language is innate.

    Language can be non-verbal as well as verbal
    People can convey emotions to others without saying a word. Emotions such as happiness, sadness and others can be represented by a gesture according to the culture.

    Emergent Literacy
    Is how children learn to read and write through hearing stories, touching books, and seeing letters, numbers and words, giving to the children the previous knowledge in order to prepare them to be ready to read and write.

  2. Language can be no-verbal as well as verbal
    This implies that people can use other ways to communicate a message to someone although gestures, facial expression and others movements in order to announce our thoughts and feelings in different ways. I think, as a result to combine the language no-verbal with the language verbal. We can obtain a more effective communication with clear ideas.

    Language and culture are closely related
    Human beings learn in every moment, in fact different ideas about customs, traditions, values etc are transmitted in many languages around the world, therefore the language helps human beings to know how to communicate as an individual belongs a specific cultural group, in conclusion the language will depends strongly of how is each culture.

    Language and thoughts are closely related
    A person do not live alone in the world, thus we communicate every day with different people, I think that language is a medium to express our thoughts. Our mind create a relation between thought and language, moreover it is impossible do not know that our mind contains ideas or thoughts which are communicated by any language.

    Emergency Literacy
    Everyone learn something new every day. In this case children acquire a language since they were born, when mother or father taught them to articulate their first word and the process of learning a language continuous in preschool years, where exist many activities to help them in developing written and reading skills, these activities include to work with some materials such as magazines, books and others in order to teach them more about the learning language.

    Human beings have an innate capacity to learn lenguage the language is an innate ability uniquet humans .We are born with basic fundamental of language.

    Language change The language is always changing . The language changes over time, space , place and across social grups .

  4. Language is universal because all cultures around the world have a language to communicate and express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings to each other as well as the rest of the world.

    Languages change as everything in the world. Every day new word are created to supply all the modern society's needs.

    Language and culture are closely related because by the time we learn a language, we are learning something from that culture. In the same way, when we teach a language we are teaching culture.

    Emergent Literacy is a process in which children are immersed in the different uses of a language; how much important is a new language for them and how they can use it in their own environments based on their previous experiences.

    Every person in the world needs to communicate. Language is an ability that allows us to do it. Even though the world is so big, people from anywhere are able to transmit a message making use of the language. There are many languages around the world which have their own characteristics. These languages help us to transmit what we want to communicate, that is why we find a language system in any place in the world.

    Languages change:
    We live in a world where people are always changing. As people change so almost everything does. That happens because we human beings are the only ones that can modify many things. I mean, other living beings such as plants or animals are not able to do it. As the time progresses we create new words or modify some things of the language because the modern generation demands it.

    Language and thought are closely related:
    The way of sharing what we think is by making use of the language. Our mind and language together help us to transmit our messages, ideas, feedbacks, or anything we want to express. When we have the opportunity of thinking it is easier for us to understand, communicate and clarify our ideas.

    Emergent literacy
    Young children start learning since the earliest age. During they are growing up they absorb a lot of knowledge. This happens when they observe close people such as their parents or caregivers. During this time they develop many skills that are necessary to be prepared to read and write while they listen, observe, and participate in daily activities. This process is called emergent literacy.

    It is important that teachers seek to instruct their students on the cultural background of language use, to choose different types of culturally appropriate teaching. According to Sapir (1921), "language is a purely human method and not instinctive to communicate ideas, Desires by means of voluntarily produced symbols.Therefore language is part of culture and is part of human behavior.

    Language​ can be nonverbal as well as verbal

    Thoughts, ideas, emotions and feelings are shared by people with expressions and movements.Even environmental factors can be taken as non-verbal communication.Wordless communications are mostly true and are not faked.Verbal and non-verbal communication occur simultaneously.

    Language change

    All natural languages change, and language change affects all areas of language use.Types of language change include sound changes, lexical changes, semantic changes, and syntactic changes Nowadays we realize that the language is constantly in place as time goes by. That is why we need to be updated and learn new skills that will help US to enrich our procedure learning a better way.

    Emergent Literacy

    Is a concept used to explain a child's knowledge of reading and writing skills before learning to read and write words. Also are consider as the developmental steps that the child takes when he takes a read before reading a text, or interacting with a book. Children often write, read as if they could do it but actually pretend. Children who have achieved emergent literacy have oral language skills , Phonological awareness, print awareness and letter awareness among others.

  7. Language is a human universal.

    Language is a human universal when this allow a human infants acquire language because they come with a hard-wired knowledge of aspects of grammar. This enables a child that recognize their native language.

    Language is systematic.

    All languages involved in generalized functions,or meta functions to construes experience about meaning of new words in the sentences and also identify sounds.
    Language must also be able to bring these meanings together these is the role structural organization, be that grammatical semantic or contextual.


    Language Change.

    As in all languages, there will be changes over the centuries as in the pronunciation of english the spelling has changes much more slowly.
    Much of language change, obviously, has come about from human migration and the use of a language by non-native speakers.

    Emergent literacy.

    During early speech and language development, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage, known as emergent literacy, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. Children see and interact with print (e.g., home, in preschool, and at daycare) well before they start elementary school.

  9. LANGUAGE IS A HUMAN UNIVERSAL
    Language as we know is universal because every single person around the world need to communicate, and we usually do that by languages; Around the world are different ways about how to communicate each other and all of them are languages, through languages we are connected with the world.

    LANGUAGE IS SYSTEMATIC.
    language is systematic because needs a structure about how to use it, every language has its own system about how to communicate in an ordered and clear way so as to transmit our ideas and world could understand Us.

    LANGUAGE CHANGE.
    now days the modern makes change, the language is adapting to their needs, creating new vocabulary to express new meaning, a good example for that are the phrasal verbs or new words to create new sense or words like Facebook, selfie, etc. The language is necessity of adaptation to the modernism.

    EARLIER LITERACY.
    It was and is used for to know how children develop their skills by themselves and by their own methods as children; Life is a process through we learn every single day. As we know, at school is where we learn how to use correctly our skills but Earlier Literacy as it says is the developing early of skills by games, touch things, tasting, seeing and experiment every thing that children know for first time, in this way they achieve to absorb new knowledge, since the first thing they touch until to know how is called every thing around them. This process is accomplished from zero to five years old, before their scholar life.

  10. EMERGENT LITERACY✏

    The term literacy relates to reading and writing. It is a way we can use to explain children intelligence and abilities by developing and reinforcing these two communication. Some examples are: songs, alphabet, greeting and concepts.

    Language can be nonverbal and verbal.every language around is human universal. no language is only regular it can be creative and functional. knowledge can't be transmitted with isolation.

    Communication doesn't occur just with expressing our ideas with words, we can also use gestures or move our body, like our hands. For example, people who are not able to communicate with words, communicate through sign language.

    Language and thought are closely related:
    We express our thoughts while we speak, we want to communicate them, and of course learn unknown concepts for us while interacting with other people because we're able to know what they think.

    Lnaguages changes:
    As everything in the world the changes, language does too. Old words are substituted with new ones, there's expressions or words that were used in the past but they're not longer used nowadays, each culture develops new words to express something, and each generation can create theirs.

    Emergent Literacy:
    Literacy is develop at a early age, way before children are able to take lessons in school and as they grow up, they develop more skills that are more complex, and is school they get to know the correct use of the skills they already had. Since children are born, they're in the process of becoming literate.

  13. Lenguage is human universal:lenguage should extend how a human faculty, because is the capacity and possibility that man have to express his thought or felling.

    Lenguage can be non-verbal as well as verbal
    We can communicate with other person's for gestures and facial expressions,lenguage can be non-verbal and verbal because we can express any word trhougt body movement, gestures.

    Lenguage change:
    Lenguage isn't set in stone. lenguage is changing all the time, and we are going to be teacher we need to prepare us for the future because lenguage is a tool where we can express us and we need to teach our students everyday the new technological demands for the lenguage.

    Children learn to understand and use lenguage to express their ideas, thoughts and feelings and to communicate with othes.
    During early speech and lenguage development , children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy like (reading and writing)

  14. Language change: the language is always changing, pronunciation evolue, and new words are invented all the time.For intance, in our country people invented new words and are using in the social life all the time. For these reason those new words are implement in the dictionary.

  15. Language is a human process. Each one culture has a different way of comunícate, is an inherent human process because every one need to comunícate ideas, feelings or emotions.

    Language is not jus verbal. Exist many kind of language for example non verbal language, write language, literally language, scientific etc.

    Language is just a part of communication. Be a good communicator is necessary for develop and be successful in relationships, in the job and in the life.

Is a great deal of preparation to read and write. For example: introducing a child to read books at an early age contributes in an interest in reading.

    Everybody has its own language and we are able to communicate with others.

  23. LANGUAGE CAN BE NON-VERBAL AS WELL AS VERBAL:
    There are multiple forms of verbal communication. The screams, whistles, cries and laughter can express different mood situations and are one of the most primary forms of communication.Non-verbal communication is carried out through a multitude of signs of great variety:visual,auditory,sounds, gestures, body movements, etc.

    LANGUAGE CHANGE:
    Today it is imperative to learn another language because in most areas of knowledge and human development other languages ​​are used. The learning of different languages ​​for the students is a primordial necessity. It is no longer a waste of time as many people usually think, but it is an investment since this learning not only enhances the possibility of getting a better job but also enriches social and cultural life, since language is the key to the culture.

    Means to communicate by using sounds or symbols. This is like cognitive process that involved in producing and understanding linguistic communication, language is the single greatest human invention of all the time there are many differences type to communicate each other. Also involved the characterics of writing, listening, reading and speaking.

    Human beings have an innate capacity to learn language
    All of humans have the ability to learn any language. For example, young children learn their home language slowly over a numbers of years. They are highly motivated to learn languages. While languages differ from each other in many ways, certain aspects appear to be shared across them and these aspects might stem from linguistic principles that are active in all human brains.

    Language and thought are closely related

    The connection between language and thought is profound. The majority of our everyday life involves the use of language. We tell our ideas to others with language that we know or we are read and every often we speak internally to ourselves when we process the information and make logica conclusions. The way we think is the way that we speak all of our knowledge are in our mind. When we are happy we think and speak cheerful but when we are in bad mood we think and speak in the bad way.

    Early literacy
    Is to help young children to read and to teach new things that they can develop their learning skills. Our work is to prepare them to learn read as already said an to write. As a teacher we have to know strategies for our students so we can motivate them to learn.
